Dr. Satvir Singh completed his WHO fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital
Philadelphia and University College of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey
for a duration of 3 months from mid July to mid October in 1999.
It was during this fellowship he realised he could use his newly gained experience and knowledge to start a retina unit that was badly needed at that time back in his community, despite having limited
resources at his disposal.
This experience strengthened his belief in the importance of training, mentoring and encouraging residents to
pursue their dreams, and use their knowledge and experience to contribute back to the community/society.
He had the opportunity to visit University of Tromso, Norway, as a member of South Asian Cataract
Management Study Group with participants from India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Here he had the opportunity to
collaborate with scientists of participating countries and Norway to formulate strategy for India. This stint gave
him the experience of working closely and collaborating with international doctors and scientists.
He was also instrumental in getting Department of Ophthalmology, PGIMS Rohtak upgraded to Regional
Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) by Govt of India in 2006.
He rose to the position of Senior Professor and head of RIO PGIMS Rohtak and later superannuated in April
2021.
Throughout his career, he worked towards giving back to his community and also trained and mentored more
than 35 students in their Postgraduate training as supervisor/ P.G. guide. This scholarship is dedicated to his
vision to develop future international standard ophthalmology mentors in India.
Growing up in a “medical family” in South Africa where his father was an ophthalmologist, Dr. Trope followed in his father’s footsteps by training in ophthalmology in the United Kingdom, including a PhD at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Dr. Graham E. Trope is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. Since 1984 he has directed the Glaucoma Service at University Health Network for last 38 years. He is the past Chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto and past Ophthalmologist in Chief at University Health Network. Dr. Trope has published more than 225 scientific peer-reviewed research papers, wrote two books, served as Editor-in-Chief for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and trained 51 glaucoma fellows from all parts of Canada and around the world. He has peer-reviewed research funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator for most of his career. He has received the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons Council Award for his contributions to patient care. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for his contribution to Ophthalmology and in 2018 he received a Life Time Achievement Award from the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. In 2018 he was given the President’s Award from the Canadian Glaucoma Society for “a career of excellence in patient care and research”. He was appointed Hon President of the International Association of Glaucoma Surgeons in Montreal in 2018.
Dr. Yvonne Buys earned her MD degree at the University of Toronto. She completed an ophthalmology residency in 1992 followed by a Glaucoma Fellowship in 1993, both at the University of Toronto. She obtained the Diploma of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1993.She is a Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Krembil Clinician Investigator, Krembil Research Institute, University Health Network, Toronto and Past President of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. In 2018, she was elected the 68th President of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) and has been a Board Member of the COS since 2010. Other leadership positions include President of both the Toronto Area Glaucoma Society (2001-2) and Canadian Glaucoma Society (2007-9). She is currently on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Glaucoma and was the past Glaucoma section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. She has been a principal investigator on many research endeavors, and has published over 170 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 16 invited editorials and 10 book chapters. Dr. Buys has made over 500 presentations at meetings and symposiums across North America and internationally. As an educator, Dr. Buys designed and implemented a unique and comprehensive introductory course for ophthalmology residents at the University of Toronto. In recognition of Dr. Buys’ pioneering work in course development, she received the Toronto Hospital Anderson Award in 1998, and the University of Toronto Clive Mortimer Postgraduate Teaching Award in 1999. In 2018, Dr. Buys received the Champion for Change award from Women in Ophthalmology at the World Ophthalmology Congress. From 2014-16, Dr. Buys was on the Planning Committee for Glaucoma Subspecialty Day at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and in 2015 received the Achievement Award from the AAO. In 2019 Dr. Buys was accepted to the American Society of Ophthalmologists with her thesis entitled ‘Influence of age, sex, and generation on physician payments and clinical activity in Ontario, Canada: An age-period-cohort analysis’. In 2021 Dr. Buys received the Mitzel Award from the Glaucoma Research Society of Canada. In 2022 Dr. Buys received the International Scholar Award from the American Glaucoma Society becoming the first Canadian and first female to ever receive this award.
As a Commandant of Command Hospital Pune, Dr. Abhijit Chakravarty has been awarded as the Second-Best Service Hospital award in 2018 by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, the then Minister of Defence and current Minister of Finance of India. He has a vast experience of professional, academic and administrative appointments. Presently he is spearheading the Medica Group of Hospitals as their Academic Head and Group Medical Director. He has large number of presentations and publications on quality control in health care management to his credit in various Scientific Journals.
To fund and train ophthalmology postgraduates in India for a 9 month period to international standards so that they are likely to be accepted for 1 year training in any sub specialty area in abroad.
The candidates will be expected to return to India on completion of their training to teach and mentor ophthalmology post graduate students
At the end of 6 months training in Ranchi and 3 months national sub specialty training, candidates will be expected to reach international standards in the following areas :
The candidate will spend 3 months working with Dr Anuradha/ Dr Dabral followed by 3 months short-term training in a national institute sponsored through our foundation in their chosen sub-specialty. The candidate will come back and work with Dr Anuradha/ Dr Dabral for the final three months period. Continued sponsorship will be provided subject to adequate performance. While in India, the candidate will receive Rs. 50,000/- a month for the 9 month training period. While abroad the sponsorship amount will vary upto 2000 US dollars a month, subject to the location and salary provided by the international training facility.
The minimum amount of time to be devoted to clinical and research work will be 6 days per week. This clinical work will consist primarily of General Ophthalmology under supervision of Dr Dabral or Dr Anuradha.
One of the hallmarks of this fellowship is thorough understanding of ocular diseases and hands on training. The Fellow will be in the OR two to three days a week. At the completion of training in India, the fellow will be expected to be able to perform topical phacoemulsification and emergency eye trauma, which are the mandatory standards for most of the international fellowship interviews. After 1 year of international fellowship in a chosen sub specialty, the Fellow will be expected to return to India to teach and provide services to their community.
Patient care, teaching and research are expected from all candidates.

Up to 7 days of conference leave may be taken on approval of the Supervisors.
The first month in India will be used as a probationary period. On successful completion of this month candidates will undergo regular assessments which will include evaluation of their surgical and clinical skills. Monthly evaluation will be held with the fellow to evaluate his or her performance to give feedback. This will help candidates to obtain strong recommendation letter from selection board. Fellows will be encouraged to provide feedback and express their comments on how their fellowship is progressing.
After returning to India, the fellow will be appointed as associate consultant in Ranchi and expected to work with Dr Anuradha for 1 year to implement and share their international experience. It is expected of the fellow to return to Ranchi to train and teach a minimum 2 new candidates. The 2 new candidates can be selected by the associate consultant.
The Adhvait fellow will be legally liable to pay back 2 times the total cost of their international sponsorship if they do not return from abroad or spend 1 year in Ranchi working with Dr Anuradha.

The Dr. Satvir Singh Scholarship for MBBS students was officially launched on January 4, 2025, and Parikshit Malvia was the First student to Recipient this scholarship.
Parikshit Malvia is a second-year MBBS student at AIIMS Deoghar, originally from Pali, Rajasthan. Motivated by a deep passion for medicine, he is dedicated to developing both his knowledge and clinical skills to serve patients with compassion and competence. Alongside his commitment to healthcare, Parikshit also strives to achieve financial stability through his medical career.
In addition to his studies, Parikshit holds a strong interest in artificial intelligence and geopolitics, continually exploring how technological innovation and global events shape the future of healthcare and human society. During his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, which helps him maintain both physical fitness and mental balance.
Parikshit believes in lifelong learning, self-growth, and pushing boundaries to evolve into a thoughtful, skilled, and empathetic doctor who can make a real difference both in the medical field and beyond.
